Out-of-State Employment
Ensure you have read and understand all the information on this page BEFORE extending any offer of employment or approve any working arrangements for applicants, candidates, or employees working outside the State of Georgia.
General Guidelines
The University of Georgia (UGA) is an employer of the State of Georgia. The University of Georgia is a public institution, and recruiting is focused on hiring employees who live and work in Georgia. Limited out-of-state work arrangements become necessary when the position and/or duties are essential and critical to the teaching and research mission and cannot be met by a USG institution employee or a state of Georgia resident.
Advance approvals from University Human Resources and Payroll must be received before offers can be made or before employees begin working. Specific tax laws and employment considerations must be arranged to avoid institutional and individual penalties. Applicable fees with states and/or countries will be charged to the unit.
Who are out-of-state employees?
- Employees hired to meet critical teaching and research mission requirements that result in being located outside the State of Georgia.
- Current employees who request or have a need to relocate temporarily or on an ongoing basis to work outside of Georgia that supports the teaching and research mission of UGA.
Next steps:
-
Complete the Out of State Request Form before an offer is made or prior to any agreements being made with current employees. Please be aware if approved, necessary arrangements with states and/or countries can take up to 8 weeks or more to establish. The team is actively reviewing these requests on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
For approved requests, Telework Agreements must be submitted and renewed annually.
-
For approved requests, a pricing model and unit responsibilities will be communicated.
Review Process
The out-of-state work location request form must be routed and signed by the candidate/employee’s immediate supervisor, HR Liaison, and the Vice President or Designee.
Requests will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis by a committee including representatives from UHR and Payroll. All committee reviewers must approve the out-of-state location before an offer of employment or work arrangement is approved
