Short-term disability insurance
Your ability to provide an income for your family is your most important asset. If you are sick or injured and cannot work, you need a way to replace lost income. You may elect a voluntary short term disability (STD) benefit plan to replace 60% of your income during absences due to non-work-related illnesses or injuries lasting up to a maximum of 11 weeks.

To file a disability claim: (1) Call 866-832-5759 (Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 11:00pm, EST) and (2) complete
the Leave Declaration for Disability Claims form.
New employees can enroll in STD insurance (first 30 days of employment) with no statement of health, although pre-existing waiting periods apply.
The cost of the MetLife STD insurance is based on 60% of your weekly benefit amount. The rate is $.291/$10 of covered benefit. For example, if your gross weekly salary is $600, your monthly premium would be (60 x .60) x .224 = $8.06.
You will begin receiving income benefits once you are out of work for more than 14 days.
Faculty please note: all faculty and staff who are paid on a ten-month payroll basis will have their premiums adjusted from January through May to include premiums needed for June and July coverage (i.e., January through May premiums will be higher).
If you wish to enroll in University System benefits, you must do so within 30 days of your employment date using the OneUSG Connect - Benefits website. Select the UGA logo and use your MyID and password to log in. If needed, you may also call the OneUSG Connect - Benefits Call Center toll free at 1-844-5-USGBEN (1-844-587-4236).
If you do not enroll during the 30-day period, you must wait until the annual open enrollment period, unless you experience an IRS-approved life event change.
