BCBSGA/Piedmont Healthcare Update
Despite the last few months of continuing network negotiations efforts between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa) and Piedmont Healthcare with the goal of securing an agreement to continue their partnership, we are very disappointed BCBSGa and Piedmont Healthcare were unable to reach a viable agreement prior to the contract expiration this past weekend. As of April 1, 2018, Piedmont Healthcare is now out-of-network with the exception of Piedmont Rockdale and Piedmont Columbus.
Faculty, staff and retirees who are currently receiving care from a Piedmont Healthcare provider have the option to request continuation of their care at the in-network coverage level. Examples that qualify for continuation of care include members who are:
- Completing a course of treatment
- In an active course of treatment for cancer
- Pregnant (any trimester)
- Being treated for a terminal illness; Hospice Care
- Undergoing transplant care or waiting for a transplant
- Being treated for a serious medical or behavioral health condition
The Continuation of Care Coverage Request Form is also available on the UGA Benefits website at https://hr.uga.edu/_resources/pdf/BCBSGa_COC_Request_Form.pdf
Please also note that if a UGA employee, retiree or covered dependent seeks emergency care at a Piedmont facility, it will be covered as in-network. Members are advised to go to the nearest hospital in an emergency situation. If you use any urgent care facility affiliated with Piedmont Healthcare, it will be considered out-of-network. Additional information regarding the Piedmont Healthcare network change is also available at the following links:
UGA Human Resources will continue to monitor the BCBSGa Piedmont situation and send out e-mail communication updates as new information becomes available. We also were very frustrated to learn that as of this morning, the “Find a Doctor tool” on the BCBSGa website has not been updated and still reflects Piedmont providers as in-network. We are working with the USG system office to urge BCBSGa to update its list of network providers as soon as possible.
