SUMMARY

This is responsible supervisory editorial work in coordinating a publications program. An employee in this class is responsible for designing publications, allocating work flow, and setting project deadlines. Work also involves checking and approving various phases of books, newsletters, and other publications. Duties are performed independently and are reviewed through observation of results.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Plans work flow of book production, promotional campaigns, and general editorial procedures.

Supervises employees involved in various facets of the publications program; interviews, hires, and dismisses employees; instructs and consults with employees on accomplishing particular assigned tasks.

Orders supplies, checks prices, and deals with product salespersons in selecting equipment and supplies.

Edits copy, proofs manuscripts, writes press releases, and writes articles for newsletters.

Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in journalism or English and considerable experience in writing or editing a variety of publications; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


Considerable knowledge of copy editing, page design, and manuscript specifications.

Knowledge of graphic design, layout, and handling of art work.

Skill in coordinating work flow to meet production deadlines.

Ability to supervise the work of others.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with clients and fellow employees.
