SUMMARY This is highly technical and independent work in the design
and preparation of illustrations for use in technical and scientific journals
and publications. |
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs all phases of graphic work including the production of charts,
graphs, forms, and other illustrative material; the photographing of this
material to produce black and white or color photographs suitable for
reproduction in scientific or other journals or printed material; the
production of black and white, color, or diazo transparent slides; and
the layout and production of printed material using an offset press, mimeograph,
or other similar reproduction equipment. Maintains records and files of work performed; assures the timely completion
of all work presented to the graphics unit; maintains cost information
for the work completed. Utilizes offset press equipment to print in-house publications, questionnaires,
stationary, and forms. Prepares press by putting on plate, mixing and putting ink in fountain,
loading feeder, gumming and wrapping plates, maintaining plate file, and
making other adjustments necessary to run jobs. Operates binding equipment such a power stapler, padding machine, collator,
punch machine, etc. Maintains a supply of chemicals, films, paper, and all other supplies
necessary for the design, photography, and printing aspects of this position. Provides routine maintenance for reproduction equipment, including copiers. As time permits, provides work-related photographic service for faculty
members. On occasion, supervises the work of part-time assistants assigned to
the graphics unit. Performs related work as required. |
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from a two or four year college with a course of study in graphics or some allied course of study or formal training and considerable experience in graphic arts work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. |
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of layout, proportion, and materials in production
of scientific illustrations. Thorough knowledge of the principles of photography and practical knowledge
of the production of photographic materials. Ability to plan, design, and layout graphic arts work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
faculty, staff, and the general public. Skills in lettering, drawing, and preparing a wide variety of materials
for production. Training and skill in the operation of mimeograph machine, offset press,
varityper, and other similar small graphics equipment. |
