SUMMARY This is repetitive work in the operation of a telephone
communication system. Work requires alertness and accuracy in placing, answering,
and transferring calls as well as familiarity with the names and locations
of personnel throughout the university. A primary requisite of the work
is prompt, accurate service of all calls in a courteous and pleasant manner. |
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Answers all incoming local and long distance calls and makes proper connections
to person or office requested; places outgoing long distance calls. Trains desk personnel in the operation of the telephone switchboard. Acts as receptionist giving routine, non-technical information upon request
and referring all other questions to the proper persons. Maintains a record, as directed, of all outgoing long distance calls,
and performs related clerical work. Records room numbers of guests for wake-up calls. Maintains a Student and Faculty Locator File. Receives and disseminates information over a two-way radio during the
hours when the Traffic and Security Office is closed. Performs related work as required. |
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from a standard high school; and some experience in the operation of heavy traffic load telephone communications systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the methods of operation of a Centrex console and/or
PBX Switchboard, student and faculty locator file, and two-way radio. Ability to operate under stress with accuracy and in a calm and efficient
manner. Ability to answer calls and questions with a clear, well-modulated and
pleasant voice, and to use correct grammatical construction and choice
of words. Ability to remember, within a reasonable period of training, the names,
locations, and functions of the offices and personnel service by the system. Ability to understand emergency and essential operations involving the
use of the communication system, and to react quickly in the prompt placing
and receiving of calls. Skill in the operation of telephone communication equipment. |
