SUMMARY

This is highly responsible typing and limited supervisory work in transcribing very difficult medical dictation.

Work involves transcribing a variety of difficult medical dictation from tapes with speed and accuracy. Employees of this class are assigned the more difficult and longer tapes to transcribe. Supervision may be exercised over lower-level transcriptionists. Work may be reviewed upon completion for accuracy.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Transcribes discharge summaries and operative reports dictated by physicians according to established format; types corrected copies.

Uses medical dictionaries, glossaries, and personal notes in transcribing.

Reviews completed assignments for technical accuracy.

Answers questions concerning form, style, and medical terminology based on knowledge of hospital policy and medical records procedure.

Establishes work schedules based on workload and available personnel.

Performs related work as required.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school with courses in typing, supplemented by courses in medical terminology; thorough experience typing medical dictation; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of medical terminology.

Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation.

Ability to transcribe difficult medical dictation.

Ability to type rapidly and accurately.

Ability to work under stress and to meet required standards of performance.

Skill in the operation of a typewriter.
