Insurance coverage for children age 19 and over
Medical, dental , vision coverage
Children ages 19-25 are eligible to be covered under the University System health, dental, and vision plans; however, parents must provide a birth certificate (or adoption papers) to prove age and relationship.
ADDING dependent children to your coverage:
During open enrollment in any given year, employees and retirees may add eligible dependent children up to age 26, with the coverage becoming effective the following January 1.
If you experience an IRS-approved life event change, you may request to add eligible dependent children at times other than open enrollment.
REMOVING dependent children from your coverage:
During open enrollment in any given year, employees and retirees may remove dependent children, with the change becoming effective the following January 1.
Retirees may also drop dependents at any time during the year, by contacting UGA HR in writing.
If a covered, dependent child of an active employee experiences an IRS-approved life event change, the employee has 30 days from the life event date to request to drop a dependent. The employee should send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to include in the email:
The life event (ex: dependent obtains other group coverage)
Date of life event
The name of the affected child(ren)
When adding dependents to your health, dental, or vision insurance, you must provide appropriate documentation to Human Resources. If you do not provide this documentation, your dependent will NOT be added to your coverage. When dropping dependents from your coverage at times other than open enrollment, you must also provide supporting documentation. Contact HR to learn what type of documentation is needed.
